Clovis High’s girls weren’t about to let Saturday’s District 4-5A tournament championship slip away.
After a back-and-forth first quarter, the Lady Wildcats ran off 11 points in a two-minute span bridging the first and second quarters and rolled to a 68-39 victory over Hobbs on Saturday night at Rock Staubus Gym.

In a game that left Clovis girls coach Jeff Reed without complaints, four reached double figures — three Clovis players and the entire Carlsbad Cavegirls team.
The Lady Cats came out with purpose, holding Carlsbad to three second-quarter field goals in a 67-10 romp Tuesday night at Rock Staubus Gymnasium.
Danni Williams had 22 points for Clovis (24-1, 3-0 District 4-5A), which had little trouble winning its 18th straight.
Suffice it to say, the anticipated showdown never materialized.
Guards Niki Cordova and Danni Williams hit back-to-back 3-pointers early in the second quarter Friday night and the Class 5A top-ranked Clovis Lady Wildcats took off from there in a 45-25 thumping of third-ranked Hobbs in District 4-5A girls play at Rock Staubus Gym.
Williams finished with 17 points and the Lady Wildcats (21-1, 1-0 district) avenged their only loss of the season, a 50-44 setback to Hobbs (20-4, 1-1) in Rio Rancho’s Mel Otero Invite in mid-December.

Rio Rancho was able to stay with Clovis High’s girls on Saturday night — until the 3-pointers quit falling.
The Rams were uncanny early, hitting four 3-pointers in the first quarter and staying close until the final moments of the third period.

Friday showed that even when the Clovis girls basketball team isn’t running on a full tank, and doesn’t play all that well, it’s still one of the top five teams in Class 5A.
As it stood, the top-ranked Lady Cats had little trouble dispatching No. 6 Eldorado 53-36 in a game they led for the final 26 minutes and never by less than nine in the second half.
